Methodology

Every PublicWorth estimate is built from publicly available data. This page explains how we source, model, and present net worth figures.

Tax Model

We apply the following tax assumptions to sale proceeds:

  • Long-term capital gains rate: 23.8% (20% federal + 3.8% NIIT)
  • Effective blended rate: 35% (marginal federal + state estimate)

These are approximations. Actual tax liability depends on the individual's state of residence, cost basis, holding period, and other factors we cannot observe from public filings.

Asset Types

Company Stock (EQUITY_COMPANY)

Share counts sourced from SEC Form 4 and proxy filings. Market value calculated using the closing price on the snapshot date. For executives with dual-class share structures, we use manual share count overrides to capture voting and economic shares accurately.

Diversified Portfolio (DIVERSIFIED_EST)

When an executive sells shares, we model the post-tax proceeds as follows: gross proceeds minus estimated taxes (35% effective rate) yields net proceeds. 90% of net proceeds are assumed to be invested in a broad market index (SPY). Each tranche is tracked independently and grown at the actual S&P 500 return from the date of sale.

Cash Reserves (CASH_EST)

10% of post-tax sale proceeds are assumed to be retained as cash or cash equivalents. This is a conservative assumption — many executives may invest more aggressively, but we prefer to underestimate rather than overestimate liquid holdings.

Real Estate (REAL_ESTATE)

Property values estimated from county assessor records, recent comparable sales, and public listing data. Updated annually or when new public records become available.

Contracts (CONTRACT)

Contract values sourced from official team announcements and verified reporting. Guaranteed money is used when available. For multi-year contracts, we track the remaining guaranteed value.

Endorsements (ENDORSEMENT)

Endorsement income estimated from industry reports, press releases, and financial disclosures where available. These figures have the widest confidence intervals due to limited public data.

Business Equity (BUSINESS_EQUITY)

Private business valuations estimated from reported revenue multiples, funding rounds, or comparable public company analysis. Updated when new valuation data becomes available.

Confidence Scoring

Each net worth estimate includes a confidence score (0-100) and a range (low-high). The score reflects data completeness and recency:

80-100

Recent SEC filings, current stock price, verified data

60-79

Good data coverage with some modeled components

40-59

Significant modeled components, fewer public data points

Below 40

Limited data, primarily estimated

Data Pipeline

Our automated pipeline runs daily after market close (10 PM ET, weekdays). It performs the following steps for each tracked individual:

  1. 1Fetch latest SEC Form 4 filings from EDGAR
  2. 2Parse transactions and update share counts
  3. 3Calculate post-tax sale proceeds for new sales
  4. 4Fetch current stock price from financial data provider
  5. 5Compute three-bucket net worth (company stock + diversified + cash)
  6. 6Generate net worth snapshot with confidence range

Historical data is backfilled to 2010 where filing history is available.
